Lost or Stolen Bank Cards, Mobile Telephones and Passports

Find out what to do if your bank card is lost or stolen in Thailand...

If a debit card or bank Visa card has been lost or stolen, the holder should go to their nearest bank branch and make an immediate report. It is important to take a passport.

Alternatively it's possible to call an emergency number.

The bank will terminate the use of the card right away. However, a person must go to the bank where the account was opened to receive another card.

If the card has been used without authorisation, the bank will help to fill out the necessary paperwork and direct the person to the nearest police station to fill out a theft report.

Lost or Stolen Bank Cards

A lost or stolen bank card, credit card or cheque book should be reported to the nearest police station who will issue a document that can be given to the insurance company and/or bank.

All stolen bank cards or cheque books should be reported to the issuing bank immediately. Below is a list of some of the major banks in Thailand with contact details for stolen credit cards or cheque books.

Credit card fraud

Credit card fraud does occur in Thailand and normal safety precautions should be followed. Only use credit cards at known and established businesses and keep an eye on the card at all times. Never write down the PIN number. Keep all credit card vouchers in a safe place and dispose of properly after checking bank statements.

Lost or Stolen Mobile Telephones

If a mobile telephone is lost or stolen call the service provider immediately to have the account locked and prevent anyone else from making calls from the phone.

All mobile phones have a unique code, the IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) code. This belongs to the handset and is associated with a card, the SIM (Subscriber Identification Module) card, which holds the telephone number assigned to a customer.

  • A SIM card - holds the telephone number and memory. Access can be protected by personalising the card with a 4-digit PIN number
  • An IMEI number (International Mobile Equipment Identity) - this is a mobile telephone's unique identification number

The IMEI number provides protection if a phone is lost or stolen. The IMEI code is clearly shown on the paperwork at time of purchase. Note it down and keep it separate from the mobile. Or to find the IMEI number, enter: *#06# on the keypad.

The loss or theft of a mobile cellular telephone must be reported to the service provider. They will need the IMEI number or details of the SIM card. The service will be suspended and the telephone blocked making it impossible for anyone else to use it, and the phone may be traced. The owner is responsible for payment of any calls made until the SIM is blocked unless they have taken out insurance with the supplier.

Lost Passports

A lost or stolen passport must be reported to the local police immediately. To obtain a replacement passport contact the local Embassy or Consulate.
